Last weekend, I whipped up a batch of my friend Amanda’s Black Bean Quinoa burgers and froze the patties so that I could have some on hand for a quick lunch or dinner. I made them for lunch today for Loys and me since the boys weren’t home (Liam is the only one who is also a fan). They are absolutely delicious and I definitely prefer them over any of the pre-made beef patties that I’ve had. They are delicious and the texture is almost identical to what you would get with a regular hamburger patty. Try it–you’ll like it!

BBQ Burgers (Black Bean Quinoa)


  • 1 can (15 oz) black beans
  • 1 cup quinoa, precooked
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup minced bell pepper
  • 2 tablespoons minced onion
  • 1 clove minced garlic
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (for frying the patties)


  • 1 tablespoon minced cilantro


These tasty veggie burgers clock in at under 150 calories each (not including the olive oil they're cooked in)!


Step 1
Mash black beans with a fork--leaving a few beans whole--creating a paste texture. Mix in the remaining ingredients (except olive oil). Form mixture into 6 patties. Heat olive oil in a skillet and cook patties until heated through and slightly brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
